Uzumaki Naruto is the main character in the anime. He is a loudmouthed, enthusiastic but a rather dumb shinobi who, after failing a few times at the Academy, became a Genin. His only dream is to become Hokage and to be acknowledged as a strong shinobi by everyone. He would really, and then we mean really do everything to make his dream come true. Naruto's favourite dish is ramen and in particular Ramen from Ichiraku's Ramen shop. He is known as an overeater there.
When Naruto becomes a Genin he is sorted in team 7 together with Sasuke and Sakura. Naruto is in love with Sakura but hates Sasuke because he always gets al the attention of Sakura and he's "The number 1 rookie" of his year. Naruto can't stand that and always tries to surpass Sasuke, in which he sometimes succeeds. Because of this they sort of change from enemies to rivals. Even though they are rivals they can work together very well in a fight. The leader of Team 7 is Kakashi. Naruto respects Kakashi a lot even though it isn't always that clear.
At the time Naruto was born, Konoha was attacked by Kyubi, a demon fox with nine tails. The 4th hokage has "sealed" Kyubi in Naruto. He intended that Naruto was seen as a hero by the people because he was the "Guardian of Evil". The opposite happened. The adults who lived through the disaster saw Naruto as Kyubi himself and hate him. They transferred this attitude to their children because of which Naruto had a lonely childhood.
At the academy Naruto didn't have any friends and was bad at everything. His teacher Iruka, who also has had a bad childhood, wants to help Naruto. When Naruto finally succeeds, he gets his head protector from Iruka. Naruto begins to like him because of this. Later they become good friends, "precious ones" like Naruto calls it. Later Sasuke, Sakura en Kakashi also become his "precious ones".
Naruto has lots of stamina, which results in him being able to have lots of chakra in himself. This together with his endurance and strong will to keep going makes him able to get back up after almost every hit he gets. This gives him a huge advantage in a fight. The Jutsu he uses the most is Kage Bunshin, with which he can make real clones of himself. Later he gets a new instructor named Jiraiya, who teaches him partly how to use the Kyubi's power, which gives him a lot more chakra. He also teaches Naruto some new techniques.
